You’ve probably been stopping at gas stations to fill up your car for years, but have you actually been doing it wrong? Our Mercedes-Benz service center has some tips to help you make sure you’re putting the right fuel in your vehicle.
What’s the Right Grade?
The first thing to think about is the grade you need. Most vehicles run just fine on regular gas, but some require premium fuel. Checking your owner’s manual or your car’s fuel door to find out what grade of fuel you need. While premium gas may be required, sometimes it’s just a recommendation, so it's up to you if you want to use it.
Which Vehicles Require Premium Gas?
Luxury vehicles – like Mercedes-Benz models – need to use premium gasoline. This is due to the high-compression ratios of their engines. Other engines that need premium fuel are turbo- or supercharged units and ones that pump out a lot of horsepower.
Am I Using the Wrong Type of Gas?
If you’re not sure which gas you should be using, there are some clues to pay attention to. First of all, if your car isn’t performing as well as it used to, you may want to reconsider the type of gas you're using. Also, if your engine makes a knocking or pinging sound while idling, this may be a sign that premium gas is necessary.
